3 Best Electric Shavers for Sensitive Skin
Razor burn? Ingrown hairs? Pimples? Redness? Dryness? Cuts and nicks?
If you’ve got sensitive skin, chances are you have one (or more!) of these issues and can attest to shaving with a razor only compounds your problems. One of my favorite recommendations for people who have sensitive skin is to use an electric shaver.
With all of the shaver options out there, however, how do you know which electric shaver is right for you?
More important, how do you know which is right for your skin?
Your skin won’t tolerate multiple tries with different shavers, so it’s important you get it right the first time.
Today, I’m sharing info you need to know about the symptoms you’re dealing with, plus help you choose the best electric shaver for sensitive skin.
Do You Have Sensitive Skin?
The first thing to do is to make sure you actually have a sensitive skin.
Lots of people think they have sensitive skin and while your skin might, indeed, be impacted by the laundry detergent you use, for example, “sensitive skin” is actually a condition recognized by dermatologists.
If you seek medical attention, your doctor will look for the following signs:
Other common issues might include skin on your face that is easily irritated, red, or itchy, eczema, or severe ingrown hairs.
When you consider everything your skin goes through in a day, it’s not a surprise that so many of us complain of sensitive skin. Between bad weather, dry air from heaters, internal stress or bad diet, and heavy pollution, it’s a wonder our skin can protect us at all!
Skin, however, is a living organ, and if you’re experiencing sensitivity, it’s important to take good care of it. You should seek out the advice of a dermatologist, but you should also take measures to not further irritate or hurt your skin.
Even aside from health reasons, nobody wants the discomfort of nicks, cuts, scrapes, and redness every time you need to shave!
One of the reasons people think they have sensitive skin when they don’t, is that most people are loading their skin up with ingredients.
The average woman uses 12 different products on her face every day. Even if you’re not applying makeup, I’m willing to bet you’ve still got a plethora of ingredients in whatever soaps, shaving creams, and moisturizers you’re applying. This all creates a heavy chemical load that can place a lot of stress on your skin.
Fortunately, using an electric razor can make a huge difference.
What to Look For When Buying a Shaver for Sensitive Skin
An electric shaver can be a huge help if your skin is, indeed, sensitive. What should you look for in an electric shaver? This can be a difficult discussion because at the end of the day the decision is a very personal one and extremely subjective.
Foil vs Rotary Shaver
Typically foil shavers are better for sensitive skin as sometimes lower-end rotary shavers can tug and pull at longer hairs.
Most men feel more in control with a foil shaver and therefore tend to feel more comfortable. High-end rotary shavers, however, can be smooth shaving experiences. It’s important to be open, however; you might find yourself surprised at what does actually work the best for your skin.
Bottom line: foil shavers might be better, but it's a matter of preference.
Wet/Dry Shave
One factor that really isn’t subjective is shaving with lubrication.
Using a high-quality lather can go a long way in helping you to avoid further skin irritation, so you will definitely want a razor that can support wet shaving. Some shavers are only suitable for dry shaving, which isn’t a good choice for skin that’s easily irritated.
Keep in mind, however, that you will have to be on top of keeping your shaver fully charged as wet/dry shavers can’t be operated while plugged in. They also require thorough cleaning (unless your shaver has a cleaning station)
Strong, Fast Motor
The last thing you need is your electric razor getting bogged down in your beard or stubble and losing power. The resulting hair pulling and tugging can wreak havoc on even skin that isn’t normally sensitive!
Ultimately, you need to invest in a shaver that will cut hair with as few passes as possible; the more passes, the more you’ll irritate your skin.
Gentle to Skin
Pay attention to the metal that your electric shaver is made from. If your skin tends to react with certain metals, you might consider a trimmer with a gold foil. Gold is hypo-allergenic and one of the best options for metal with metal allergies.
Quality, Sharp Blades
Blades that dull quickly will cause two problems: first, you’ll have to make more passes over your skin, exacerbating that top outer layer that’s already compromised.
Second, your shaver might start tugging on the hairs it can’t cut, which will cause further discomfort if not outright pain. It’s always so tempting to go with the cheapest devices possible, but be careful! A poor quality blade is definitely not something to skimp on.
Shaver’s Head Doesn’t Get Too Hot
Many consumers don’t think about this, but it’s an issue, especially if you shave more than once a day or shave a large area (your whole neck and large portions of your face) or if you have to tackle a tough beard or long stubble.
Heat can irritate and outright damage your skin, and that’s a possibility if you’re using a shaver that gets too hot during use.
Great for Long Hairs
One of the best recommendations for people with sensitive skin is to not shave every day. If you follow this advice, however, you need a shaver that can handle longer hairs without tugging or pulling.

GENERAL OVERVIEW
Braun makes great electric shavers, and the 797cc is no exception.
I especially appreciate what Braun calls the “personalization modes,” which includes a setting for sensitive skin. The powerful motor creates 10,000 micro vibrations with every stroke to help capture and shear as much hair as possible, so you shouldn’t find yourself making more than one or two passes.
It’s battery charges in an hour and lasts for approximately fifty minutes, but the really exciting thing about this shaver is the cleaning station it comes with.
Just pop your razor in when you’re finished, press a button, and the station will take care of all the cleaning and oiling for you. If you don’t want a hassle, this is the shaver for you! It's especially important when doing a wet shave.
USAGE
The 797cc is a foil shaver with three cutting edges. Two outside foil covered heads shave your hairs down to 0.05 millimeters while the center ActiveLift blade lifts stubborn hairs that lay down.
The battery charges quickly and there's a quick charge option if you forgot to charge the shaver.
Shaving is fast and you can choose to shave with gels or foams or just a regular shave. When you're done you just put the shaver in the cleaning station to get it cleaned, sanitized and charged.
WHY IS IT BEST FOR SENSITIVE SKIN?
This shaver is wet/dry, so you can use it in the shower or use it with protective creams and gels for the best shave. I love the oscillating middle trimmer and believe it does, indeed, help to lift hair so that you avoid multiple passes over the same spots. Plus, that setting specifically for sensitive skin is hard to beat!
VERDICT
This is not a cheap shaver, but the extras are hard to beat, especially the cleaning station!
Braun series 7 shavers are the best on the market for their price, I even recommend them over the series 9 which is much more expensive and doesn't provide such great value.

GENERAL OVERVIEW
What stands about immediately about this small (and it is small, coming in at just under half a pound) foil razor is its large head, which accommodates a total of five blades.
Each blade is precision honed at set at 30° and delivers 14,000 cuts per minute. In other words, this razor is fast. There are some complaints, however, at it being too large for contoured facial areas, such as the neck or chin, but most find that the large, quick blades allow them to shave more hair in less time, resulting in less heat and fewer passes.
The Panasonic also includes a pop-up beard trimmer, a bright LCD screen, and a travel case, though it’s also missing any kind of stand. You’ll enjoy the feel of it in your hand, as it’s lightweight and sleek. To clean, simply use the vibrating setting and hold it under water.
USAGE
I love how quickly the Panasonic works, and how easy it is to use. It certainly makes quick work of long jobs! It gets a close shave, though if your face is smaller or you know you’ll be shaving hard-to-reach places often, this might not be the right shaver for you.
It charges very quickly and holds charge very good, as a security measure you won't be able to use it while charging.
Why It’s Very Good for Sensitive Skin?
This electric shaver is great for black men with sensitive skin (or anyone with sensitive skin, really) thanks to its speed. You won’t need to make pass after pass to get a clean shave, and since it’s waterproof, you can use the Panasonic with shaving cream or gel.
VERDICT
Price wise this shaver is in the middle between the expensive and cheap. For this price you get an amazing shaver that will work wonders if you have a sensitive skin.
If you like the Arc5 but looking for a cheaper version, you can try the <<Arc 4>> which is also a great & cheap shaver.

GENERAL OVERVIEW
This rotary shaver from Norelco is cordless and can be used for dry or wet shaving.
It boasts a powerful motor, shorter shave times and a blade design that causes hairs to stand up on end before shearing for a closer shave. It’s three rotary heads flex in five different directions for a more contoured approach to your face, and it comes with a great extra accessory: a precision trimmer that clicks into places so you can trim your mustache or sideburns.
With a bright LED display, one-touch open for easy cleaning, and include protective cap, this is an all-around useful implement. You can fully charge it in one hour with the provided power cord, or use the five-minute quick charge option. When fully charged, you can use this Norelco 5100 for up to forty minutes.
USAGE
This is a really comfortable, easy to use shaver. Slightly on the heavy side, its sharp blades make for a quick shave, so that’s not too much of an issue.
It is very easy to clean--just pop off the top and rinse with water. It does not, however, have a charging dock or station, so you’ll have to leave awkwardly on a counter or tucked away in a drawer.
WHY IT'S GOOD FOR SENSITIVE SKIN?
What’s great about this shaver is how quick and smooth it cuts. You typically have to spend quite a bit more to get a rotary cutter that handles longer hair well, but this super affordable option is a great find!
Since this Norelco has a special design to grab hairs before cutting them, it’s especially great for black men who have sensitive skin and curly hair.
So you're getting a strong shaver that cuts quick and smooth, it has wet/dry shave and it's great for long hairs as well. A good choice for those with sensitive skin!
VERDICT
Light on the accessories but heavy on the work, this is a great option for somebody who doesn’t want to pay a lot but wants a shaver that will be great for his sensitive skin.
